Hong Kong football has reached an exciting new milestone. We are proud to announce that SID player Ng Yee Sun, a 23-year-old goalkeeper from Hong Kong, has officially signed with Spanish second-division club Cádiz CF, becoming the first Hong Kong player in the club’s history.
Standing at 199 cm tall, Yee Sun joined SID’s Path to Pro programme one year ago. Through professional assessments, individual goalkeeper training and trial opportunities with Spanish clubs, he earned a contract with Cádiz and took an important step into Spain’s professional football system.
From Hong Kong to European Football
Yee Sun began his football development in Hong Kong. He played for the Hong Kong Rangers youth team and trained with the Kitchee Academy and Chelsea Soccer School.
In 2018, he moved to Portugal to continue pursuing his football ambitions. He trained with Sporting CP’s U16 and U17 teams before gaining further experience within the Portuguese football system.
Playing abroad is never easy. Young players must face intense competition while adapting to a new language, culture, training environment and style of play. The challenge is even greater for goalkeepers, as there is usually only one starting position available. Patience, consistency and strong mental resilience are therefore essential.
Joining SID’s Path to Pro Programme
One year ago, Yee Sun chose to join SID’s Path to Pro programme. Our team began by assessing his physical attributes, goalkeeping ability, experience and long-term objectives before creating a personalised training and club-matching plan.
During the programme, Yee Sun received professional assessments and individual training from former Spanish professional goalkeeper Toni Doblas and his team. The sessions focused on essential areas such as shot-stopping, positioning, decision-making, distribution, penalty-area control and communication with defenders.
Based on Yee Sun’s qualities and stage of development, SID arranged training sessions and trials with different Spanish clubs. After a series of evaluations and months of consistent hard work, he earned the recognition of Cádiz CF and secured a contract with the club.
Entering the Cádiz CF Player Development System
Yee Sun will initially train and compete within the Cádiz development system, where he will work to earn playing opportunities and gain valuable match experience.
Signing for a second-division club does not mean that he has already become Cádiz’s first-team goalkeeper or played in Spain’s second division. It means that he has successfully opened the door to a professional Spanish club environment.
The next stage will require him to earn the coaches’ trust through every training session and match. He must continue improving, adapting and demonstrating that he is ready to compete at a higher level.
Becoming the first Hong Kong player in Cádiz’s history is an important personal achievement for Yee Sun and a meaningful breakthrough for Hong Kong football. His signing has also attracted coverage from several Hong Kong media outlets, bringing greater attention to the possibilities available to local players in Europe.
The Contract Is Only the Beginning
From Hong Kong to Portugal and now Spain, Yee Sun’s journey shows that pursuing professional football requires ability, determination, proper planning and access to the right platform.
SID connects talented players from Hong Kong and Asia with opportunities in Spanish football. Based on each player’s age, ability, education and objectives, we provide professional assessments, individual training, club matching, trial arrangements, federation registration support and long-term football career planning.
One year ago, Yee Sun placed his trust in SID. One year later, his ability and hard work have helped him earn an opportunity with Cádiz CF.
The contract is not the end of his journey. It marks the beginning of a new and even greater challenge.
We are proud of what Yee Sun has achieved and look forward to supporting him as he continues to develop and prove himself in Spain.
